Replacing Floorboard

There are occasions where it is no longer possible to rescue a floorboard and it is necessary to replace it. The replacement procedure involves several tools and steps. The damaged floorboard has to be cut out carefully and replaced with a floorboard of the same width and thickness.

Some of the tools and materials that will be needed for this procedure include a drill, a spade bit, a circular saw, a chisel, a hammer, a caulk gun, a nail set, masking tape, adhesive, flooring nails, wood putty, and of course, the replacement boards.

Here is how the basic procedure for replacing the damaged floor board goes. First, using a ruler one has to draw a rectangle around the area that is damaged. Then you can count the number of boards that have to be removed. Try to make this number as minimal as possible. 

Secondly, it is important to determine how deep the boards have to be cut. To find this out, you can use a drill and a small spade bit to drill through the damaged board until you reach the subfloor. Using a rule, you can use then see how deep to set your circular saw.

Now, to create a wood cutting guide, you can place a wood strip inside the damaged area with nails slightly sticking up. Now, align the saw with the guide and turn on the saw. However, do not cut the last section of the corners. You can now repeat this procedure with the other two sides. Using a hammer and a chisel, you can complete the cuts and using a pry bar, a hammer, and a leverage block, you can now remove the board.

Now, when the strips are completely out, you can measure the length and width of the area to create the new board with a table saw. You can now proceed to install the new board in place. Use a pick drill to set the board in place. 

Then you can drill pilot holes and drive finish nails through the holes. After filling the holes with wood putty, is now time to sand the patch and apply the necessary wood stain and/or restorer.
