How to Remove Stains from Upholstery

Upholstery often bears the brunt of a lot of stains. In some homes upholstery is used to relax, to have fun and to catch stains when people eat on it. Unlike a hard surface, it is much more difficult to clean upholstery. Fortunately there are a few tricks you can use to clean up stains quickly and easily.

Spills happen quickly. And, you must clean them quickly in order to remove them efficiently. The best way to prevent stains from setting in is to ensure your upholstery is maintained well. Be sure you vacuum upholstery regularly so dust and dirty is removed routinely. This will help prevent stains from settling in.

You should invest in a vacuum with an attachment to get into cracks and crevices. Sometimes food falls into the nooks and crannies of a couch or other type of upholstery, and being able to get into these far regions will help you keep your upholstery looking its best.

If a spill makes its way onto your sofa or couch, it is always a good idea to blot it and not rub it. Rubbing stains will always help the stain to set rather than to clean the stain from the region. Check to see what type of fabric your upholstery is made of, as this will determine the type of cleaning method you use.

If you are not sure what type of upholstery you have, most have a tag that is located on the back or underneath your upholstery. Some tags will tell you what type of cleaning product to use to remove stains. Many will recommend a water-based detergent. Others may recommend an upholstery fabric and water-free cleaner.

Some may recommend professional cleaning. If this is the case you may need to vacuum your fabric only. It is wise to avoid buying upholstery like this unless you can afford to have it professionally cleaned.

Homemade Upholstery Cleaner

One of the simplest cleaners to save your fabric is easy to make. You can simply mix 2 cups of warm water with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap. After this create foam. Blot this into your stain, and then apply a white cloth to soak up the stain for 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary.

Another good mixture to try is a cleaning paste created from ½ cup of baking soda, with ½ cup of water. The baking soda will help life stains. Apply the paste to your fabric, and let it dry for about 30 minutes. Once it is dry, brush or scrape off the paste, and vacuum up the remainder. You should find most of the stain removed.
