Tiling Made Simple

Keeping to a budget when you redo rooms in your home can be pretty tough. One of the easiest ways to help cut down cost is to lay your own tiling down. Although this might be a pretty intimidating task, you might find that this job is easier than you thought it would be. With this task easily done you can concentrate on more troublesome areas of your home design.

Before you begin to tile you should really think ahead. Try to find a way to place as many full tiles on the floor as possible. This will give you the best finished look possible. You may have to use us come cut tiles, but try to avoid any awkward shapes. The cut tiles should be placed along the edges of walls or cabinets while awkward shaped tiles should be placed where they can easily be covered by furnishing. You will also want to find a time that the room can be shit off for at least a day as tiles shouldn't be stepped on within the first 24 hours.

You will want to begin by making straight chalk lines on the floor to help you keep the tiles straight. You should also begin laying the tiles down along the edges of the wall to help enforce the straight line look. When you are ready to actually lay down you tile you will need to mix your thinset and latex additive, but make sure not to mix more than you can use in a 2 hour period as this will cause it to try out too much.

Once you have everything mixed you will lay down a thin coat of the mixture in a small area. Gently place a tile down on the mixture and make sure it is in perfect alignment and then push down firmly. You will continue to do this row by row until you have finished the job. The tiles must sit for a day before you can move on to grouting the tiles, which follows the same process only you are trying to get the grout mainly in between the tiles. The grout should sit for half an hour and then the tiles are safe to be wiped down and ready to present to the world.

Your flooring experience doesn't have to be overly complicated. If you really want to save a lot of money when you redo your home then follow these simple steps and enjoy the home you tiled yourself. You will soon realize that DIY projects can be incredibly rewarding!
