Start out by putting the first coat onto the wall, after you clean the wall and patch holes. If you need a second coat then put it on after the first dries. Once everything is dry you can play the stencil on the wall and add the paint. When working with a stencil you will want to choose a color that compliments the base coat, rather than causes an eye sore. If you plan to free hand paint on the wall then draw out your design and begin the work. Of course, you might have to add several coats to the design if you want to get rid of the base coat color.
